DAMILOLA BOYS LOSE APPEAL 
05 JULY
Two brothers convicted of the manslaughter of 10-year-old Damilola Taylor lost their appeals against their eight year sentences. Danny (pictured) and Ricky Preddie, both of Peckham south east London are likely to be released in 2010.

BLACKS 'UNFAIRLY' TARGETED FOR DNA TESTS 

NEWS 10 JULY Innocent Black people are three times more likely than white people to have DNA samples stored on the national database. Figures show 23 per cent of people whose details have been archived after being arrested but not charged were non-white. The Commission for Racial Equality has contacted the Government demanding answers.

TORIES WILL DEMAND WEED RECLASSIFICATION

NEWS 09 JULY Tory leader David Cameron says the health risks associated with cannabis is so great it should be reclassified as a class B drug, carrying greater penalties for possession and trafficking. Evidence suggests that stronger forms of week such as skunk is causing an epidemic of mental health disorders where young Black males are one of the many groups seriously affected. The Labour Government downgraded weed to class C in 2004.

TEENAGE FOOTBALLER WAS KILLED OVER GIRL

Kiyan Prince - murdered in 2006NEWS 03 JULY THE parents of murdered teen soccer star Kiyan Prince believed their son was killed over a girl.
Mum Tracy Cumberbatch and Kiyan’s father, former boxer Mark Prince branded his murderer, 17-year-old Hannad Hasan, a jealous sick coward.
Cumberbatch, 39, said: “Girls always liked Kiyan.Everyone knew this girl liked him -
but nothing happened.I have no doubt Hasan confronted Kiyan about the girl. He would have disliked the fact that the girl fancied Kiyan who was in the year below -It would have hurt his pride.”
Prince said: “This guy was jealous of my son. He had been play-fighting with Kiyan’s friend but the moment he saw Kiyan, he went for his knife. Hasan become obsessed because Kiyan was more popular."
Both Kiyan’s parents sat through the Old Bailey trials and were angered to hear Hasan's claim that the stabbing was “an accident”.
Cumberbatch said: “We wanted him to give his account in court but he didn’t. It was sad to see him walking past and waving and joking with his family.”
Both parents
say Hasan should never be released. Tracy and Mark have now launched the campaign, Put The Knives Down, Put The Guns Down, to educate children about the dangers of weapons. The track featuring rapper Tinie Tempah is available on iTunes. Hasan is will be sentenced on July 26.

SHIRLEY'S STAR STILL BURNING VERY BRIGHTLY

ENTERTAINMENT 02 JULY Dame Shirley Bassey has been enjoying record sales soar since appearing at the 2007 Glanstonbury festival writes The Sun newspaper. The 70-year-old’s new album, Get The Party Started, was among the top five sellers at music chain HMV last week. Sales of her greatest hits album also rose 79 per cent. The Wales born star is one of the most prominent Black British entertainers
