The Lewis Hamilton phenomena is all about firsts and breaking records. The first Black Formula One driver, the first rookie driver to achieve three podium finishes in his first three races, and the first driver to appear embarrassed in the receipt of an unprecedented amount of media praise and accolades.

But Hamilton is no over night rags-to-riches success story. Despite his tender years he was born for moments like this - well almost.
From a very early age Lewis's father Anthony nurtured his young son's interest in motor sport. Starting with go-karts his father pulled out all the stops to help his son fulfil his driving ambitions, writing letters, badgering the media and working multiple jobs to support their combined passion. Anthony Hamilton always appeared confident that one day his Lewis would achieve greatness and touted his young son's achievements at every level of the sport as a indicator to what he believed his son could and would ultimately achieve - an F1 driver's seat.

Hamilton senior however despite his son's early success has expressed some disappointment that Lewis did not do better at school/college. Like most Black parents, Anthony believes education along with diligence is the key to opening doors to opportunity.
What has been remarkable about the rise of Lewis Hamilton has been his humility in victory. While media pundits and fans rave about the young star and in the process knock former Brit favourite Jenson Button, the Hamilton's quietly but openly acknowledge the support and help the fledgling racer received from the Button family and a host of others who helped Lewis along.

The youngster from Hertfordshire is now being likened to the American golfer Tiger Woods for his professional attitude to sport and his humility in victory. The F1 driver will no doubt be touted as a role model to Black youngsters throughout Britain, but what is an evident element to the success of his story so far is the strength of the background family unit.
Lewis Hamilton is the first Black F1 World Championship driver and is destined for even greater things...
