Best known as: An active campaigner
Lee Jasper is best known for his political activity and has been
called an agitator. He is a member of the Labour party and has been directly
and indirectly involved with several Black 'pressure' groups and campaigning
organisations for well over a decade. He's been a policy advisor to the now defunct Inner London Education Authority
(ILEA), and was the secretary of the Notting Hill Carnival. Additionally
he' s chaired numerous committees including the National Black
Alliance,
National Black Caucus and Operation Black Vote (OBV). Other group involvement has included the directorship of the 1990 Trust,
a council member of Charter 88, a board member of the Black Jewish Forum
and in 1999 was appointed to the Home Secretary's Race Relations Forum
as an advisor.
Some would argue that Jasper has made a career out of political agitation
and pressure groups, whilst others could argue his corner as a dedicated
black social campaigner. He was vocally active in the campaigns following
the 90s death in police custody of Wayne Douglas and became actively involved
in the Stephen Lawrence campaign. Jasper hit the headlines in the Summer of 2001 with a call for 'Black
only' schools, where he called upon the Black community to take advantage
of existing Government schemes to provide schools catering for the specific
needs of Afro Caribbean and African children.
Not surprisingly Jasper was a BA (hons) graduate in Social Science's and
is now senior advisor to the London Mayor on Race Relations. He lives
in the capital.
