Not surprisingly barrister David Lammy was returned to Westminster
in the June 2001 election with a 16,916 majority, making it an excellent
year for the young Labour parliamentarian.
Born in Tottenham, he won a June 2000 by-election to claim the seat
vacated following the death of veteran MP and Black social rights campaigner
Bernie Grant. Lammy became Westminster's newest and youngest MP on June
21, 2000 and hasn't looked back since.
However, one of his first actions as an MP involved lobbying the fast
food chain KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) following its decision to close
a local branch.
The Tottenham MP was angered by the fact that the fast food joint was
withdrawing from the area after 21 years and loss of a source of local
employment. It was also the very same branch he'd worked at as a 16
year old.
Lammy studied law at London University and Inns of Court School of Law.
He practiced as a barrister first and then gained a masters in law at
Harvard. He still lives in his Tottenham constituency and says he'd
like to be a catalyst for change in Tottenham.
... he became Westminster's newest and youngest MP when he took
his seat in the House on June 21st 2000.
