Brendon Batson is considered to be among the pioneering Black footballers of yester-year. In the 70s - early 80s at West Bromwich Albion he formed part of a trio ( Batson, Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis) affectionately dubbed the three degrees by footie fans.
Although unlike Regis and Cunningham he never won a full England cap he won honours at England B level. He played over 172 games for the West Midland's clubs at a time when Black players had just begun breaking into a hostile footballing scene where racism and verbal abuse from the terraces were commonplace.
Batson also played for Arsenal and Cambridge before hanging up his boots in 1984. Until recently he was deputy chief executive at the Professional Footballers Association which he helped turn into a multi-million pound operation and one of the richest trade unions in the world. He is managing director at Premiership West Bromwich Albion Football Club.
He lives in Greater Manchester with his family.
