THE WRONGS IN BLACK AND WHITE |
26 MAR 08 BlackInBritain.co.uk
was created in 2001 to counter the negative depiction of Black
people in the national press. These
pronounced images of Black people have a profound influence on today’s
communities and our youth. We don't believe in reinforcing and
encouraging negative stereotypes.
Together with our media partners we've cultivated an unique
audience of 57,000 loyal readers. Our aim is to provide on single
site access information that will have a positive impact the
Black community.
We know how the mainstream media focus on the negative and where Black people are featured outside of
the news, it’s normally sports, arts and entertainment related.
But there's more to the Black community than that. With our partner
organisations and groups we strive to provide a window on who's
doing what, where and how within our community. Our content and
lists are becoming more comprehensive all the time.
BlackInBritain sets out to redress the mainstream media imbalance by providing
a single personality-centred website where the exploits of Black
people making the news is highlighted with their achievements are
listed, with the how, the where and when, as it relates to whatever
they are best known.
The most popular
names, the good and bad, are featured and listed in the main who’s
who index alongside a detailed profile; the lesser known individuals
are featured in the searchable A-Z reference index.
BlackInBritain
therefore puts into context the Black presence in Britain and takes
into account the contributions made by the said individuals listed
and offsets it against the negative images readily spouted by the
mainstream media.
At BlackInBritain we throw the spotlight on the ordinary
people doing extraordinary things. But
its not a new idea. Every year since our conception in 2001
newspapers produce lists very similar to ours, but nowhere does a comprehensive database exist for
the benefit of the Black Briton seeking enfranchisement.
ALL
CONTENT is provided in conjunction with our media partners,
who are all actively working within the community. This helps provide
a balanced objective editorial view and keeps our fingers on the
pulse of community. Collectively we say there
are positive things happening to Britain’s Black people. We
attempt to do that on a weekly basis via the profiles, features and
stories.
The popular press like to hold up certain people as positive
‘role models’ but at BlackInBritain we suggests choosing
your own from reading through the oceans of people profiles,
references and comment pieces.
